What to Look For In a Family Dentist

Last year my family and I moved home and once we managed to get the move done and we settled down, it was time to start getting used to my new surroundings. During this time you have to not only get your bearings, but also find new services such as doctors and dentists. The doctor I was able to find pretty quickly but I had quite a few options when it came to which Yeovil dentist I would use. I was able to find a great dentist in the end and after this experience I thought I’d share some tips with you on how you can find the best dentist for your family.

NHS or Private

The first thing to check is what your options are nearby, in terms of private dentist practices or NHS practices. With a quick search online you can find the nearest NHS clinics to you, and be warned that many private dentist clinics also have some NHS places. Going via NHS will ensure that your costs are kept to a minimum, and the standard will still be the same.

First Warning, Appointment

The first thing that I wanted to see was how quickly I could be seen, I had an idea that as a new patient this would happen pretty quickly. My idea turned out to be wrong and of the 5 dentists which I called, only 1 could see me within a week. Now it may be that a dentist just so happened to be busy, but I like to know that I’m going to be seen quickly should I need to see the dentist.

Taking The Kids

As much as I dislike going to the dentist, for me the most important thing is that my kids feel comfortable with the dentist which we have. For tis reason I would always recommend that the first time that you go to a new dentist, take the kids with you. When you are in the surgery see how the staff are with the kids, and in particular how the dentist is with kids. What you should be looking for here is a dentist that understands children and can accommodate them.

How Many?

I decided on my dentist based on the speed of that first appointment and how they were with the kids, but you should still monitor beyond this to make sure that you got your decision right. The reason for this is that many dental practices, especially larger companies who have multiple premises, may have different dentists in every day. I am very keen on having a trusted dentist who knows us and who we know, so be vigilant after selecting your dentist.

For me, as long as the kids are happy with the dentist which we have, and as long as we know that we can be seen in a timely fashion, I see no reason to look elsewhere. If you are struggling with your selection, speak with friends and family in your area, or check online to see who has the best reviews.
